How common is tinnitus?

How common is tinnitus?

Large survey studies suggest that 8-20% of the general population suffers from tinnitus. That incidence rises to 30% if you only consider people over age 50.

Of those that report tinnitus, 28% describe the symptom as moderately annoying, 16% as severely annoying, and 5% report that their tinnitus severely affects their quality of life.

The take-home point here is that this is not a rare problem. If we extrapolate from these figures, we estimate that at least 3.8 million people in the United States alone have tinnitus that is at least severely annoying.

It can be comforting to know that you are not suffering alone.
